Before I delve into the heart of it and I start imparting any Wedding Singer wisdom I think it’s appropriate for me to discuss copyright and why it is so important that intellectual property is respected by all.
For those of you who just have a general interest in Vocal Show and what I do as a Wedding Singer you should know that everything you see has been created from scratch and with you (the customer) in mind, from the website’s design right through to the wedding entertainment packages and the choices of wedding music I perform.
To those of you who are embarking on becoming a Wedding Singer the first thing you need to be thinking about is this: What is your image? And by this I mean ‘What is YOUR image?’ If you can start with a basic respect for the ideas of others then you’re going in the right direction. Remember they call it Intellectual Property for a good reason!
BREACHING COPYRIGHT
Copyright protects broadcasts, sound and film recordings, artistic works, literary works and more! This means that you shouldn’t reproduce somebody else's work into another medium without their prior consent. There are fine lines with copyright and it can often be disputed to whether copyright has been breached in some cases, though at other times it’s plainly obvious. In my time as a Wedding Singer I have been made aware of such breaches involving our competitors.
I don’t think that it would be fair of me to name and shame these wedding entertainers, only to say that in the most recent case I found that a fellow Male Wedding Singer and Female DJ Combo had literally copied and pasted a large amount of text from our home page onto their own, only to change the odd word and thankfully taking our names out! When I contacted them about the matter they denied this, however the offending text was promptly changed on their website. Although it is flattering that someone likes our work so much, it is offensive and insulting to know that they have stolen ideas with the intention of gaining profit from them.
BE CREATIVE AND KEEP MOVING FORWARD
On a final note I would simply advise that if you’re looking for a great image that does you justice then you should spend the time and effort creating original ideas. Also always display your own copyright notice. We have done this ourselves with this Wedding Blog as you can see along the bottom of each page.
