WHAT THE HELL IS A WEDDING SINGER!?
Indeed! For it appears that when I tell people that I am a professional ‘Wedding Singer’ there are usually one of two reactions:
1. Abrupt laughter, followed by “Oh I’m sorry but it just reminds me of that film, you know… 'The Wedding Singer’ ?“, or
2. A slight pause, then “Sooo, what exactly does that entail then?”, fearing to state the obvious.
Yet the obvious is well, right! I sing for weddings.
A Wedding Singer is quite often a Solo Vocalist, working without the accompaniment of a band or any other live musician, performing throughout the wedding breakfast and/ or evening reception. Wedding Singers will often use pre-recorded instrumental music (Also known as Backing Tracks) controlled via a laptop or other media device. A Wedding Singer can also describe someone who performs solely for the wedding ceremony, by either providing a cappella performances or those backed with instrumentals of some sort.
BEING A PROFESSIONAL WEDDING SINGER
I have worked as a professional Singer for weddings and other special events since 2001 and I am still learning! As is the same with most other jobs, there is much more to being a professional Wedding Singer than meets the eye. Being a great Wedding Singer isn’t simply about turning up at a wedding, singing a few soppy songs and then stuffing your face with the buffet. it’s about the overall service, it’s about the commitment to making someone’s wedding day that bit more special, it’s about a professional responsibility to take care of and manage music for a very important event, it’s about making people happy!
Being a full time, self managed, professional Wedding Singer takes commitment, passion and focus. You have to love the job through and through, and of course you must love performing in front of a live audience!
Being a full time Wedding Singer has allowed me to meet some wonderful people and share in many special moments that will be remembered for years to come. I like to think that I have left a lasting impression of the lives of many couples out there, who wanted something a little more personal for their big day. When I think about this it makes me feel good about what I do for a living. I am proud to call myself a Wedding Singer.
