Becoming a Wedding Singer: 4. Building a Great Repertoire

View Building a great repertoire

Having a large and varied repertoire/ song list is essential for any professional Wedding Singer who wishes to produce unique and tailored shows. Before thinking about your demos, stage clothes, equipment and even advertising you should put some serious time in and come up with a show – a list of songs that are compatible and that will make for some great listening when performed live. To make it easier and get you started just learn enough songs to make 2 x 45 minute shows (which seems to be the industry standard), you can then slowly add more songs that will allow you to vary these shows and offer your clients the option of choosing their own favourites.

When I put my first repertoire together I thought long and hard about my music choices and started with 50 songs, which was about 2 and a half hours worth – more than enough to allow for variation in my performances. Here are some quick tips to consider when putting together your first repertoire.

TIPS FOR PUTTING TOGETHER A GREAT REPERTIORE

  1. Learn as many songs as you can: The more you have as a Wedding Singer the more you can vary your shows to keep them interesting and to suit different occasions. It will also stop you from getting bored with your material
  2. Only learn songs that you can sing well: There’s no point in performing a popular song if you just can’t pull it off. It’s better to just move on and concentrate on your strengths.
  3. 80% Upbeat – 20% Slow: This is roughly the ratio of fast to slow songs that you should aim to have in your repertoire. A lot of Wedding Singers make the mistake of learning too many ballads, which end up resulting in depressing and sluggish shows that people don’t want to dance too.
  4. Stay Popular: Try not to be too geared towards one particular genre and stick with Pop music in general, unless you’re selling yourself as a specific type of act. People like to hear what they know and don’t generally want to be ‘Educated’ in obscure music when they’re celebrating at a wedding.
  5. Make it presentable: Once you’ve learnt your repertoire save it to a word or PDF document so that you can present this to your clients when the time comes. I find that it’s useful to present your repertoire in a number of formats, so make one by Song name, then maybe others by Artist, genre, decade etc. This can make choosing songs a little more pleasurable for your clients.

Hopefully with these tips in mind you’ll be well on your way to producing a great repertoire and becoming a top class Wedding Singer. Keep in touch with the Vocal Show Wedding Blog for more great posts on Becoming a Wedding Singer amongst other useful news and topics.

Wedding Singer Music Requests

YOUR WEDDING MUSIC REQUESTS

As a Wedding Singer it is important that I receive your wedding music requests, or at least an idea of the style of music that you would like to hear on your special day. As it states on the Vocal Show website, it’s YOUR SHOW! and so you should hear all of your favourite tunes on this day.

MAKING THE SHOWS

Here’s how I like to work it, for those who aren’t familiar with the requesting process:

  1. Wait until about 1 month before your wedding day/ Party and then visit the Repertoire section of the Vocal Show website. Here you can view my whole repertoire/ song list on the website or download a copy by Song, artiste or decade (In PDF format).
  2. Take your time and note down any songs that you really like. Try not to worry too much about limiting this list to a number, the more I have the easier it is to make a strong show.
  3. Once you have your wedding music list go through it and highlight your absolute favourites.
  4. Then finally just pop these in an email and send them across to me.

…And that’s it, nice and simple.

EXAMPLE WEDDING MUSIC REQUEST LIST

Here’s a good example of a wedding music request list that I received back in July 2009. Notice that it has a good proportion of Slow – Fast songs, which makes it very easy for me to make an uplifting Show:

  1. Your Song
  2. When you say nothing at all
  3. Have I told you lately
  4. My girl
  5. Sitting on the dock of the bay
  6. The way you look tonight
  7. Beyond the sea
  8. Fly me to the moon
  9. Let’s face the music and dance
  10. Ain’t that a kick in the head
  11. That’s life
  12. That’s Amore
  13. It had to be you
  14. Moondance
  15. Come fly with me
  16. Brown eyed girl
  17. Build me up buttercup
  18. Stuck in the middle
  19. Crazy little thing called love
  20. Save the last dance for me
  21. How sweet it is
  22. A little respect
  23. She moves in her own way
  24. Golden touch
  25. Up all night
  26. Shine
  27. Smooth
  28. Grace Kelly
  29. Sweet home Alabama
  30. You can’t hurry love
  31. Dance the night away
  32. Dancing in the moonlight
  33. Human
  34. It’s not unusual
  35. La Bamba
  36. Town called Malice
  37. Last request

New Wedding Testimonial! Jenny and Nick Nushi

WEDDING SINGER IN KENT

On Saturday 30th May 2009 Luca and Sally provided the Gold Plus Wedding Singer and DJ package at The Museum of Kent Life in Maidstone, Kent for Jenny and Nick Nushi’s evening wedding reception.

Here is a short sample of Jenny and Nick’s wedding entertainment testimonial:

“Luca and Sally really did a fantastic job entertaining our guests at our evening wedding party at the Museum of Kent Life. We went for the Gold Plus package which we felt worked really well, seeing Luca sing at the beginning of the party for our first dance (which was a lovely touch), followed by DJ Sally, and then again for another set later in the evening. What we especially liked was the ability to request our favourite songs before the day, and to discuss the day with them …”

Becoming a Wedding Singer: 2. Before We Begin – Copyright

COPYRIGHT © 2007 VOCALSHOW.CO.UK

vocalshow

Before I delve into the heart of it and I start imparting any Wedding Singer wisdom I think it’s appropriate for me to discuss copyright and why it is so important that intellectual property is respected by all.

For those of you who just have a general interest in Vocal Show and what I do as a Wedding Singer you should know that everything you see has been created from scratch and with you (the customer) in mind, from the website’s design right through to the wedding entertainment packages and the choices of wedding music I perform.

To those of you who are embarking on becoming a Wedding Singer the first thing you need to be thinking about is this: What is your image? And by this I mean ‘What is YOUR image?’ If you can start with a basic respect for the ideas of others then you’re going in the right direction. Remember they call it Intellectual Property for a good reason!

BREACHING COPYRIGHT

Copyright protects broadcasts, sound and film recordings, artistic works, literary works and more! This means that you shouldn’t reproduce somebody else's work into another medium without their prior consent. There are fine lines with copyright and it can often be disputed to whether copyright has been breached in some cases, though at other times it’s plainly obvious. In my time as a Wedding Singer I have been made aware of such breaches involving our competitors.

I don’t think that it would be fair of me to name and shame these wedding entertainers, only to say that in the most recent case I found that a fellow Male Wedding Singer and Female DJ Combo had literally copied and pasted a large amount of text from our home page onto their own, only to change the odd word and thankfully taking our names out! When I contacted them about the matter they denied this, however the offending text was promptly changed on their website. Although it is flattering that someone likes our work so much, it is offensive and insulting to know that they have stolen ideas with the intention of gaining profit from them.

BE CREATIVE AND KEEP MOVING FORWARD

On a final note I would simply advise that if you’re looking for a great image that does you justice then you should spend the time and effort creating original ideas. Also always display your own copyright notice. We have done this ourselves with this Wedding Blog as you can see along the bottom of each page.

Imagination: My First ‘Session Singer’ Experience

SESSION SINGER FOR ITPF SCREENPLAYS

Here’s something completely different from the other Wedding Blog posts. About one month ago I was contacted by a Screenplay writer; a lady who goes by the name of Annie G. (http://www.itpfscreenplays.co.uk). She explained how she had found our website whilst searching for professional Singers in Bristol and that she loved what she heard from the demo samples. Annie went on to explain that she would like to hire me as a Session Singer, for the purpose of recording ‘Imagination’; a song that she had written for one of her screen plays.
As my expertise is mainly as a Wedding Singer and not as a Session Singer I saw this as an excellent opportunity to experience something a little different and get my feet wet with some serious studio time!

IMAGINATION: FROM ‘ONCE UPON A GALAXY’

The following YouTube clip contains a sample of ‘Imagination’ – one of the songs written for a children’s play called ‘Once upon a galaxy’. The full version of this song can be found Here.

FOREST OF DEAN RECORDING STUDIO

‘Imagination’ was written by Anne G. but composed and recorded by a talented musician/ composer called Richard Speller (http://richspeller.co.uk). Richard is the owner of Rural Studios in Forest of Dean, where we spent the time recording the track.
Annie was very pleased with the final mix and I am happy to say that she would like me to work on the remaining songs for this particular project….So watch this space!

Becoming a Wedding Singer: 1. Introduction

WHAT THE HELL IS A WEDDING SINGER!?

wedding singer

Indeed! For it appears that when I tell people that I am a professional ‘Wedding Singer’ there are usually one of two reactions:

1. Abrupt laughter, followed by “Oh I’m sorry but it just reminds me of that film, you know… 'The Wedding Singer’ ?“, or

2. A slight pause, then “Sooo, what exactly does that entail then?”, fearing to state the obvious.

Yet the obvious is well, right! I sing for weddings.

A Wedding Singer is quite often a Solo Vocalist, working without the accompaniment of a band or any other live musician, performing throughout the wedding breakfast and/ or evening reception. Wedding Singers will often use pre-recorded instrumental music (Also known as Backing Tracks) controlled via a laptop or other media device. A Wedding Singer can also describe someone who performs solely for the wedding ceremony, by either providing a cappella performances or those backed with instrumentals of some sort.

BEING A PROFESSIONAL WEDDING SINGER wedding singer2

I have worked as a professional Singer for weddings and other special events since 2001 and I am still learning! As is the same with most other jobs, there is much more to being a professional Wedding Singer than meets the eye. Being a great Wedding Singer isn’t simply about turning up at a wedding, singing a few soppy songs and then stuffing your face with the buffet. it’s about the overall service, it’s about the commitment to making someone’s wedding day that bit more special, it’s about a professional responsibility to take care of and manage music for a very important event, it’s about making people happy!

16-05-2009 17-22-48

Being a full time, self managed, professional Wedding Singer takes commitment, passion and focus. You have to love the job through and through, and of course you must love performing in front of a live audience!

Being a full time Wedding Singer has allowed me to meet some wonderful people and share in many special moments that will be remembered for years to come. I like to think that I have left a lasting impression of the lives of many couples out there, who wanted something a little more personal for their big day. When I think about this it makes me feel good about what I do for a living. I am proud to call myself a Wedding Singer.

WHY WRITE ABOUT BECOMING A WEDDING SINGER?

This series of posts are made to be of interest to:

  1. Those who wish to learn a little more about me and what is involved in my job as a Wedding Singer.
  2. Those of you who are interesting in becoming a professional, self managed Wedding Singer and learning more about what is required of you to succeed in the wedding entertainment industry.

This will be the first of many posts, where I will be providing advise on the various aspects of the Job, the do’s and don’ts, etc. I will refer to my own past experiences and highlight what I think are areas of importance.

I sincerely hope that you all find this series of posts useful and enlightening. I welcome any comments and questions that you’d like to put forward.

All the best
